Counting my blessings

Hey Friends,

A song caught my ear last year, Seph Schlueter’s Counting My Blessings. Do you know it?

You should.

It has a simple but catchy little tune, a message that resonates, and a chorus that will have you singing along:

God, I'm still counting my blessings

All that You've done in my life

The more that I look in the details

The more of Your goodness I find

Father on this side of Heaven

I know that I'll run out of time

But I will keep counting my blessings

Knowing I can't count that high

This song speaks truth.

When I stop to remember how God has blessed me, the more of His goodness I really do find. How about you?

With Thanksgiving just a couple of days away, I’m sure you will soon be pausing to count your blessings, but really, is one day … or even one week … enough?

One of my favorite Instagram personalities is a gal named Amy Hale. Her August 12, 2024, post gave me pause. It was a photograph of a page in her gratitude journal. She says filling up a page “always redirects my thoughts to what is good in my life and it also serves as a weapon when the enemy taunts about things that aren’t going so well.”

At the top of the page, she’s jotted down the date and blessing number … the page begins with blessing #6,028 and ends with blessing #6040! Honestly, some days I struggle to remember to jot down one blessing in my planner, but even on those days, God has blessed me in so many ways that I shouldn’t have enough room on the page to record them all.

Do you keep a gratitude journal or, like me, do you try to remember to jot down what you’re thankful for in your planner or somewhere else? I really like the idea of a dedicated gratitude journal or some other kind of dedicated space to track … no, to NUMBER God’s blessings in my life.

Since I saw Amy’s post, I’ve been pondering how I can be more intentional about recording my blessings and expressing my gratitude to God. In thinking about it, I've discovered that I want to go even deeper than thanking Him for a beautiful sunrise, or a fun time with a friend. I also want to record how I see God working in my life; the prayers He has answered; ways He has revealed Himself to me through His Word, nature, a sermon, a friend’s love; His provision for my needs; His care and protection; reflections and memories of His faithfulness, kindness, generosity, and goodness to me in the past; and more.

So, this is one of my goals. Will I do it perfectly? No, and God already knows that, but I'm confident that the fact that I’m trying delights His heart.

How about you? How will you carry the spirit of Thanksgiving to God throughout the year?

Let’s talk . . .

Do you keep a gratitude journal or record your blessings somewhere? How has it helped you in difficult times? What would help you be more consistent in counting your blessings so you can remember to thank the God for them?

Counting My Blessings - Seph Schlueter

It's like it was yesterday

I was a praying for a miracle

Scared to have a little hope

And now looking back today

Seeing all the things You've done

I can't even add them up

One, two, three

Up to infinity

I'd run out of numbers

Before I could thank You for everything

God, I'm still counting my blessings

All that You've done in my life

The more that I look in the details

The more of Your goodness I find

Father on this side of Heaven

I know that I'll run out of time

But I will keep counting my blessings

Knowing I can't count that high

And I know the seasons never last forever

So God, I will remember

All of the reasons my heart has to be grateful

All the times You've been faithful to me

God, I'm still counting my blessings

All that You've done in my life

The more that I look in the details

The more of Your goodness I find

Father on this side of Heaven

I know that I'll run out of time

But I will keep counting my blessings

Knowing I can't count that high

Oh, I can't count that high

High

Oh, oh-oh-oh, oh-oh-oh

High

Oh, Your goodness, Your goodness

One, two, three

Up to infinity

I'd run out of numbers

Before I could thank You for everything

God, I'm still counting my blessings

All that You've done in my life

The more that I look in the details

The more of Your goodness I find

Father on this side of Heaven

I know that I'll run out of time

But I will keep counting my blessings

Knowing I can't count that high

I will keep counting my blessings

Knowing I can't count that high
